The Overview

Bright Plum is a web agency built on deep, technical work, the kind that earns a 100% client renewal rate and referrals from nearly every client it serves. Its founder had two decades of expertise and proof most agencies would kill for. The one thing standing between that proof and its growth was the story he told about it. He led with price.

The Challenge

The numbers were elite. The messaging didn't match them. Fredric led with "cost-effective" because price is the one claim nobody argues with, a safe harbor for a technical founder carrying real impostor syndrome. After two decades in the work, he was still worried about being challenged in public on something he already knew to be true. So he stayed quiet: no posts, no podcasts, and little said about what the company actually does.

That silence had a cost. When a buyer can't tell what makes you different, they can only compare you on price. Bright Plum's renewal rate never entered the sales conversation. Its referral numbers stayed trapped inside past clients. The agency had become the best-kept secret in its niche, and best-kept secrets don't get referred.

Fredric wanted to:

  • Say what makes Bright Plum different, without fear of being challenged on it
  • Stop defaulting to price as the one safe claim
  • Turn his renewal and referral proof into something prospects could actually hear
  • Show up in public, in posts and on podcasts, instead of staying invisible

The Process & Solution

We ran a three-week sprint to uncover Bright Plum's positioning, not invent it. The raw material was already there: Fredric's own client survey data, and the language his best clients used when they described the work. Our job was to find the signal in the noise and hand it back as claims he could defend in public, because they were already true.

Together, we:

  • Read his client survey data to pinpoint why clients stay and refer
  • Pulled the exact language his best clients used to describe the work
  • Reframed his technical depth as the differentiator, not a reason to discount
  • Moved the renewal and referral proof to the center of the story, where buyers see it
  • Retired "cost-effective" as the lead and replaced it with a claim he could stand behind

The best positioning never feels invented. It feels like someone finally said the thing you already knew. This wasn't about making Bright Plum sound different. It was about giving Fredric the words for what was already true.

The Results

By the end of the sprint, Bright Plum had:

  • A positioning built from real client language, with nothing to defend because none of it was invented
  • The renewal and referral proof moved to the front of the sales narrative
  • Clear, sticky language ready for the website, posts, and sales conversations
  • A reason to stop hiding behind price, and permission to charge like the work warrants

Most importantly, Fredric walked away with a message he could stand behind, not because it sounded clever, but because it came straight out of his clients' own words. His own reaction said it best: the positioning was "so validating."
